Grains ~ Food Pairing

Oats

Cinnamon, vanilla, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, jam, bananas, raspberries, berries in general, dried fruit and cream. Also, I feel, Drambuie!

Quinoa

Actually I think this is a seed but it does have a very grain-like attitude. It goes well with olive oil, onions, garlic, mint, parsley, fresh coriander, feta cheese and seeds

Buckwheat

Mushrooms, apples, pears, prunes, dates, dried fruit.

Rye

Caraway, oats, almonds and, once made into bread, cream cheese, smoked salmon and Swiss cheese.

Cornmeal

See here for fresh corn.

Good stock, cream, milk, cheese, okra, corn (obviously) onions, garlic and chilli.

Rice

~ Long grained rice for stir fries etc. go with lots of things but particularly with onions, garlic, soy sauce, fish sauce, seeds, all sorts of herbs and spices, saffron, seafood, meat, and coconut.
~ Short grained rice – used for rice pudding goes with cream, vanilla, cinnamon, caramel, fruit – especially berries, honey, maple syrup and jam.
~ Risotto rice goes with good stock, wine and parmesan cheese but lots of other things too; shrimp and other seafood, deli meats, chicken and other meats, asparagus, mushrooms, fresh herbs
